Bring on the Blues, May 14, 6pm

On Tuesday, May 14, the Tahoe Music Institute will be presenting it’s 3rd annual Bring on the Blues event at Dockside 700 in Tahoe City. Many of the Institute’s finest young musicians will be featured jazz artists performing along side their instructors, whom are all accomplished musicians in the Tahoe area. The musicians are instructors at the Tahoe Music Institute and include, Kerry Andras of Sneaky Creatures and Todd Holway of Quartet Minus One. The event will be led by the director of the Institute, Shauna Righellis. Students will be performing many types of music including the blues.

Community Recital December 16

The Tahoe Music Institute will host its first community recital featuring the hidden classical talents of the Tahoe area on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Sawtooth Ridge Cafe in Tahoe City. Music selections include J.S Bach, Amy Beach, Iganaz Pleyel, Elliott Carter and Gabriel Faure, which will be performed on piano, violin, clarinet and French horn. And don’t miss the newly formed Lake Forest Clarinet Quartet that will also be making their debut performance. The recital is free and open to the public. Feeling tipsy? Adult Beginning Guitar Class meets Wednesdays @ 6:30pm

Have you always wanted to start playing guitar? Here is your chance to learn in a relaxed setting from a friendly and knowledgeable instructor. This class,taught by Kerry Andras, will focus on learning the basics of playing guitar. The class will cover topics including, but not limited to:

Tuning, Chords, Strumming, Chord Progressions, Music Theory, Singing, Folk/Campfire songs.

The class will be taught by Kerry Andras, and will meet on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30pm

Holiday Recital

Our 3rd annual Holiday Recital will be held on Thursday, December 13 @ 6pm at the Kings Beach Event Center. Participating students should arrive between 5:30 and 5:45 to get ready. Admission is free and refreshments will be served after the recital.

FREE Introductory Piano Classes

Jazz Combo/Improvisation Series Tuesday Nights

We are currently registering students for our Jazz Combo/Improvisation Series, which is directed by Todd Holway. The Jazz Combo class will learn a repertoire of jazz, funk, soul, latin and reggae tunes by ear along with techniques to improvise over these songs. Emphasis will be on using the ear to learn tunes with minimal use of charts, encouraging the musician to get off the page and get into the music! This class will also offer an introduction into techniques to improve musicality such as ear training, transcribing, and composition. Everyone will have the opportunity to write their own song to be performed by the group. This is a performance-based class that will be performing throughout the community. At least 2 years of jazz band experience is preferred. Classes start October 2.

Children’s Youth Chorus Starts September 18

The Children’s Youth Chorus will be offered on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 starting September 18. This is a performance-based course designed for students ages 8-14 that will focus on the fundamental skills and vocal techniques needed to perform in a vocal ensemble. Students will perform a variety of music throughout the class session. No experience is necessary.

Apps for Music Practice

With so much technology at our fingertips today, it seems there is an app for everything; including music practice. Students can easily dowload a great variety of music apps, many of which are free, including note reading games, tuners, metronomes, recording software, practice journals and more. These apps can help keep students interested in practicing and as well as keep their music tools organized. All students are encouraged to explore different music apps as well as discuss technology and practice with their instructors.

Jazz Combo & Chamber Music Summer Performances

As part of the TMI’s continued efforts to encourage student performances, our Jazz Combo and chamber music students will have 2 performances this summer. Come eat, drink, and be merry while we perform on Monday, August 20 @ 1:00pm at Dockside 700 in Tahoe City and on Sunday, August 26 @ 1:00pm at Jason’s Beachside Grill in Kings Beach. Performances will be featuring our newly formed Jazz Combo, directed by Todd Holway, our sax trio and clarinet duo, directed by Shauna Righellis.
